This tour takes you into the
heart of the UAE and offers an ideal combination of nature & culture. Our
direction is east and the drive offers some picturesque views of the
magnificent "Red sand Dunes". The route is straightforward and leads to the
peaceful town of Hatta, which nestles in the foothills of the rugged Hajjar
Mountains. Our first stop will be at the Hatta Heritage village, set in its
own oasis and guarded by two watch towers, here you will discover the
traditional life of days gone by. The drive continuous through the narrow
mountain passes and wadis "river beds", along which we will see numerous
villages and small towns with its interesting mix of old dwellings made of
stone, ‘arish’ (palm frond) roofs, and concrete houses. We reach Mahda, an
old caravan post with great wealth of water and soil that hasn’t lost the
intrinsic charm of an Omani authentic village; the houses are made of mud
surrounded by several palm plantations with fortifications around them and a
central oasis, rich and green. Our route continue in circular direction
towards the old village of Khutwa, the highlight of our journey, the
contrast between the new and old village will become more and more evident
while cruising our way into this breathtaking Oasis. We will rest our cars
and proceed further on foot down the quiet and tranquil path surrounded by
gardens irrigated by a ‘Falaj’ (old underground irrigation channels), the
easy hike will end up at the deep gorge (another highlight), after which a
lunch picnic will be served on the banks of a ‘Falaj’ with gushing water
drumming to the ears. Before winding up our journey we will stop at the
fossil valley and explore some of the hidden fossils of ancient shells and
creatures, these were created when limestone formed around their shells on
the ocean bed making a mould, which then solidified, leaving a perfect
imprint.
